The Valtellina Superiore DOCG designation of origin is dedicated to red, still and dry wines, produced in Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, starting from the Nebbiolo grape (locally called “Chiavennasca“) for at least 90% of the total, here you can visit Valtellina Wineries.
Within the production area of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG wine, the sub-zones Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella are identified. The minimum period of refinement of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG is twenty-four months, of which at least twelve in wooden barrels. Wines can carry the qualification “riserva” if subjected to an aging period of at least three years. Steep and terraced vineyards, source of the best grapes, require processing almost entirely by hand, hence the wording Eroica Valtellina.
The 5 sub-zones are: Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and Valgella, both the Riserva qualification and further additional geographical references.
