You arrive at Pomario on a single road made of little white stones, which twists and turns through a dense wood. The scenery surrounding it is invisible and an almost unreal silence transcends immanence.
This was the landscape in which the two visitors immersed themselves for the first time: Giangiacomo Spalletti Trivelli and his wife Susanna d’Inzeo, daughter of show jumping champion Raimondo, who arrived at Pomario, in the commune of Piegaro, almost by chance, inspired by the idea of having their own personal hideaway in Umbria where they could get away from the chaos of Rome.
For some time, Count Giangiacomo had had a desire to take up once again his family’s tradition of making wine, which dated back to the end of the nineteenth century.
Their dream of a hillside farmhouse in the peace and quiet of the countryside, where farming would not only be a passion but an exercise in patience to be developed every day, gradually took shape.
They replanted the vineyards, entirely restructured the estate, and began their first experiments in the winery, thanks to the help of agronomist Federica De Santis and enologist Mery Ferrara.
The first vinification at Pomario, in 2009, was carried out in the tool shed: a tonneau of Sangiovese and a barrique of Trebbiano and Malvasia, the future Sariano and Arale. These immediately gave a clear idea of the potential of these wines and of the terroir.
In 2010 vinification was repeated, with the same quantities. Someone suggested that the owners send some samples to Decanter’s competition and Sariano, to their great surprise, won a Silver Medal. Since then, Sariano has always won either a Bronze or Silver Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
In 2011 it was the turn of Pomario’s olive oil, which obtained organic certification. At that time, the olives were taken at the end of the day to a mill not very far away. To enhance the quality of this product even further, the estate bought a small mill that allowed the olives to be pressed within a couple of hours of being picked. Since then, Pomario’s extra virgin oil has been rewarded several times over the years with important accolades such as Gambero Rosso’s 3 Leaves, 5 Drops from Bibenda and, in the international arena, with a Silver Medal at the AVPA Competition in Paris.
The story of the little hill of Pomario has therefore had a fresh start, giving new life – thanks to Giangiacomo Spalletti Trivelli and Susanna d’Inzeo – to that place in the countryside of Umbria, on the border with Tuscany, between the hills of Orvieto and Lake Trasimene, that is today the Pomario Estate, with 230 hectares in all, of which 9 hectares are vineyards on the enchanted hill.

During my time at Pomario Winery, I was impressed by the effort Cristina puts into her job. Her knowledge of the wines and the region added a special touch to the wine tasting experience. The generous portions of delicious food served at the winery paired perfectly with the extensive selection of wines offered during the degustation. The combination of flavorful dishes and ample wine samples made the visit truly delightful. I was shocked to see how much food was served to us and the amount of wine poured into every glass, everything was of high standard.
Cristina’s warm and welcoming demeanor, coupled with her expertise in wine, enhanced the overall atmosphere of the winery. The attention to detail in both service and presentation, along with the abundance of wine provided, made the tasting experience both educational and enjoyable. Pomario winery, with Cristina at the helm, is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts looking for a memorable and enriching experience.

Absolutely fantastico!!!
We had the best tour and experience here with Stephanie who was so knowledgeable and passionate. Loved the information of the roses at the end of each vine.
We loved it so much, easily the best wines we had in our month of travelling Italy.
Wish we could buy the wines back home in Australia.A fantastic and beautiful winery.

We had a wonderful tour and tasting at Pomario yesterday.
We loved especially the wines Arale, Sariano and the Muffato delle Streghe. And very good options for vegan antipasti.
Very nice taste in the interiors as well :-).

Picturesque biorganic winery and a wonderful – one of the highlights of our visit to Umbria – tasting and lunch experience. The guide and service was warm and friendly, the food features the best of local producers and, of course, the wine was a perfect pairing. We enjoyed every sip, and having two toddlers on hand did not phase any of the staff. In short, top points!
Looking forward to enjoying their wine at home.

We had such a wonderful experience at Pomario. What a lovely tour of this beautiful facility. The wine was delicious and we really enjoyed our tasting so much. The food was a tasty surprise. It was so nice to be able to try local products and learn about food and wine traditions in the area. Cristina and Valerio, the Sommeliers not only shared their knowledge, but also were warm and welcoming. We could not recommend this place more. Do not miss this!

I met Stefania at a London wine tasting. Her knowledge and passion for the wines are out of this world. Stefania stood out from all the wine producers and had the busiest stand at the event. Their wines are just unbelievable. Stefania is an excellent entertainer and wine connoisseur. She made our evening a great delight. Planning my trip to visit their winery in Perugia now.

My husband and I were getting married at the nearby Casali de Colle San Paolo and a private wine tasting was organised for our guests at Pomario the day before our wedding and it could not have been more perfect. The winery is absolutely stunning, the building is beautifully made with a lovely, windowed area where we all could gather to taste the wines. Pours were generous and food that was arranged for us (at very reasonable additional cost) was 10/10 – great meats, cheeses, salads and breads that all our guests raved about. Whether you are coming here on your own or with a group we cannot recommend it enough!

Pomario is a wonderful small winery with impeccable taste and service. Stefana and team were incredibly accommodating for a fun tour and homemade lunch with wine pairing. The gnocchi was the best we’ve ever had. Although not a restaurant, they certainly went above and beyond for our large group of 12 to create a truly personal experience. Highly recommended!
