The first important evidence of vine cultivation in the Oltrepò Pavese comes from the discovery of a shoot dating back to prehistoric times, found near Casteggio. Oltrepò Pavese was credited with inventing the barrel, in the 1st century BC. In 1884, the Oltrepò Pavese boasted 225 native vines, while today there are only about a dozen of the most widespread ones. Despite this decimation, the Oltrepò wine panorama is still very rich, especially with regard to the different types of wine produced, including those provided for by this production specification.
The vines are those traditionally cultivated in the geographical area considered, such as Barbera, Riesling, Croatina.
Distinctions can be made between areas suitable for the production of white grapes or sparkling wine base and areas more suitable for the production of red grapes. This does not take away from the fact that the entire Oltrepò area is well suited to the cultivation of all the grapes mentioned here.
The areas most suitable for growing grapes intended for red winemaking extend along the hilly strip between Torrazza Coste and Zenevredo and are characterised by steep slopes and thick ridges. The most suitable strips are the warmest ones close to the plain and located at altitudes between 100 and 300 m., with slopes mainly exposed to the south/west and with steep slopes.
